The Seventh Consciousness Should Emulate the Tathāgatagarbha, Not Abiding in the Realms of the Six Sense Objects

Question: "One should give rise to the mind without abiding anywhere." If this mind is the tathāgatagarbha, then why did the Buddha say "should"? The true mind, the tathāgatagarbha, is inherently non-abiding. Whether to abide or not is not something the mind consciousness can control. Please explain, Master~ Thank you 

Answer: "Should" — when the eighth consciousness responds to conditions and manifests the myriad dharmas, it abides nowhere. The seven consciousnesses should also, in facing the six sense objects and facing all states, be non-abiding. This is the meaning of "should."
