Dharma Teachings

The thinking of the mind consciousness belongs to thinking; the doing of the manas belongs to doing.

All dharmas are without anything attainable; the Heart Sutra says, "Because there is nothing to attain, the bodhisattva"; the Diamond Sutra says that the World-Honored One, because His mind had nothing to attain, received the prediction from the ancient Buddha Dīpaṃkara. Some people then think: since all dharmas are without anything attainable, with no self and no possessions of self, then there is no need to strive at all—let even thought come to a stop, and simply settle into nonaction. When thinking this way, the mind feels very relaxed, but this state cannot last long; soon one is striving again, and when encountering conditions, events, or people, one is not the least bit nonactive.

This is because, before the empty mark of all dharmas has been realized, the emptiness that the mind consciousness conceives of has no power whatsoever and cannot be master at all; whatever striving there is continues just as before, and nothing can be emptied in the slightest. The mind consciousness may wish to be still and unconditioned, but it cannot be the master of the five-aggregate body; the manas, which is the master, has its pursuits, and when it wants to create and act, the mind consciousness must comply, with no way around it. Therefore, even though the mind consciousness understands some principles, if the manas does not understand them, no substantive problem can be resolved. Thus the mind consciousness attaining realization of the fruits or seeing the mind cannot change anything at all—afflictions remain afflictions just as before, ignorance remains ignorance just as before, and birth-and-death remains birth-and-death just as before. Only by settling the manas, which is the master, can all problems be resolved and a heaven-and-earth-transforming change take place.
