All Dharmas Are All the Function of the Eighth Consciousness

Supernatural powers are functions of the mental faculty, enabling consciousness to penetrate. Yet the most divine and wondrous is the Eighth Consciousness, for the mental faculty is also a function of the Eighth Consciousness, consciousness is also a function of the Eighth Consciousness, the five sense consciousnesses are also functions of the Eighth Consciousness, and the five aggregates and eighteen realms are also functions of the Eighth Consciousness. In essence, all are functions of the Eighth Consciousness; there is not a single dharma that is not a function of the Eighth Consciousness itself. It is the Eighth Consciousness itself that, relying on conditions, operates all dharmas, and even these conditions are functions of the Eighth Consciousness. Even the worlds and Buddha-lands in the ten directions, and all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions, are functions of the Eighth Consciousness. The entire reality is one true Dharma realm of the Eighth Consciousness, without duality or otherness; not a trace of reality or autonomy can be found in any dharma apart from the Eighth Consciousness.

A golden world is entirely made of gold, with not the slightest thing that is not gold. The Buddha Dharma is exactly like this—how wonderful it is.

Every single thought of ours, whether wholesome, unwholesome, or neutral, is a function of the Eighth Consciousness. All mental factors of our seven consciousnesses—attention, contact, sensation, perception, and volition—are entirely functions of the Eighth Consciousness. All our physical, verbal, and mental actions are functions of the Eighth Consciousness. Even our practice of the Buddha Dharma, our efforts to extinguish greed, hatred, and delusion, are functions of the Eighth Consciousness. Moreover, even the ignorance we give rise to and all the afflictions and defilements that arise are equally functions of the Eighth Consciousness. There is not the slightest dharma that is not a function of the Eighth Consciousness; not the slightest dharma comes from outside the Eighth Consciousness. There is nothing outside the mind; everywhere we look, it is all the Eighth Consciousness.

If the mental faculty can directly realize this dharma, the afflictions of greed, hatred, and delusion will gradually fall away completely, and ignorance will gradually be utterly exhausted. These dharmas can only be realized through contemplation within samadhi. Only when the mind is in samadhi can it resonate with the Eighth Consciousness, enabling it to profoundly perceive that all dharmas arising within the mind are functions of the Eighth Consciousness. Thus, abiding in the dharma, the mind breaks through afflictions, exhausts ignorance, attains great function, accomplishes Buddhahood with ease, and gains great liberation.
