Repentance Text of the Manas (意根忏悔文)

Repenting of myself   from beginningless time   down to this present life

Never once pausing   I have stolen   all the treasures of the Buddha

Foolish, deluded, and arrogant   claiming them as my own   reckoning everywhere

Grasping at everything   not knowing that everything   is originally the Buddha

How could there be a self?   Self and what belongs to self   seeing gain, forgetting righteousness

Not knowing gratitude and nurture   because of grasping (upādāna)   I have never escaped

The deep pit of karmic obstructions   impoverished life after life   suffering birth after birth

Repenting of myself   from beginningless time   down to this present life

Discriminating everything   grasping it as self   view of self and pride of self

Self-love and self-delusion   constant deliberation (manasikāra)   imputed nature (parikalpita-svabhāva)

Grasping seeing as self   grasping hearing as self   grasping smelling as self

Grasping tasting as self   grasping touch as self   grasping consciousness as self

Grasping that I can do   all deeds and undertakings   grasping that I can discern

all the principles of dharmas   grasping that I can achieve   virtue and honor beyond compare

Only today do I know   that in truth myself   I am nothing at all

Repenting of myself   from beginningless time   down to this present life

Grasping my faculties and body   grasping my material world   grasping my supernatural powers

Grasping my virtues and abilities   grasping my becoming a Buddha   grasping my spreading the Dharma

Grasping my delivering sentient beings   only today do I know   that in truth myself

I am capable of nothing   From times past   I falsely grasped at the worldly

Up until now   I falsely grasp at the transcendent   such false grasping

I deeply perceive   that the World-Honored One will not   bestow a prediction upon me

Yearning for a prediction   the thieving mind refuses to die   when can I ever ascend

the supreme jeweled throne?   From this day forth   where shall I go, what shall I do?

Thief or person of honor   I must choose one   wash my heart and change my face

Reform myself and start anew   return everything   that is not mine

Bare and naked, utterly exposed   moving freely at ease   departing in nonaction
