In learning Buddhism and cultivating practice, we learn the dharma of signlessness; the mind must gradually detach from the worldly. Only when the mind departs from the worldly and from signs can it gradually attain purity and non-action, and accord with the unconditioned dharmas that transcend the world. If even the most ordinary worldly festival makes us care about it and go along with the crowd, with our minds bound tightly to worldly affairs, then without learning to take things lightly, how can we attain liberation? Worldly people are unbearably vulgar, while practitioners must ultimately transcend the ordinary and rise above the worldly. Therefore we must not cling too tightly to worldly dharmas, sinking deep into the worldly realm unable to pull ourselves out, running contrary to the Path—when would we ever set foot on the great road of liberation?
