Writings that are not Buddhist scriptures or mantras can be burned directly. However, for Buddhist scriptures, mantras, and the names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas that are genuinely beyond repair, cannot be preserved, or are unsuitable for giving away to form affinities, one must recite the Sin-Expiation Mantra before burning them. If they can be repaired, preserved, or given away to form affinities, they absolutely must not be burned. Some people, upon seeing monastics in temples burning damaged Buddha statues or Buddhist scriptures, think they can also burn Buddhist scriptures similarly. Observing how others act is merely seeing the superficial phenomenon; in reality, the methods and intentions behind others' actions are not easily discernible. Sometimes, others may perform an action without committing any offense, violating any precept, or facing any consequence. Yet, when one does the very same thing, it may constitute an offense and a violation of precepts. People differ in their intentions, levels of merit and virtue, spiritual cultivation levels, and adherence to precepts and duties; consequently, the results and karmic retribution differ. One must not casually imitate others' actions.
