Original Text: The fundamental truth was transmitted as a Dharma; once transmitted, it is said there is no Dharma. Each must realize it for themselves; once realized, there is no non-Dharma.
Explanation: All Buddhas and Patriarchs throughout the ages have transmitted to their disciples the Dharma of Suchness. Although this Dharma of Suchness is formless, it is truly existent—its appearances are empty, yet its essence is real. Although disciples receive this Dharma and awaken to the Way, in truth, they attain nothing and obtain no Dharma whatsoever. Suchness is originally one’s own precious jewel, not acquired from outside; it is merely discovered. After discovering it, one realizes that not a single dharma exists within the five aggregates of the mundane world—all are manifestations of Suchness. Gradually, the mind ceases to cling even to the Dharma of Suchness, for it is both everything and nothing at all. It is both supremely precious and utterly worthless—no one would want it even if given freely. Beings with great resolve must strive individually, cultivating and awakening by themselves. After awakening, they understand that neither the mundane nor the supramundane realm is utterly devoid of Dharma, nor is everything entirely illusory. There remains one Dharma that is not illusory—it is truly existent. Thus, they may rest assured, for this is not the annihilationism of utter nothingness.
