The Dharma Transmission Verse of the Twelfth Patriarch, Mahāsattva Aśvaghoṣa

Original text: 隐显即本法，明暗无不二；今付悟了法，非取也非弃。

Explanation: Whether hidden or manifest, the tathāgatagarbha, with respect to sentient beings, always possesses its inherent functions of the fundamental nature; it is an intrinsically existing dharma that never disappears or perishes. The brightness and darkness within sentient beings' minds are not entirely two separate dharmas from the tathāgatagarbha; brightness and darkness, delusion and awakening, exist because of the tathāgatagarbha and arise in dependence upon the tathāgatagarbha—their fundamental nature is the tathāgatagarbha. What I now transmit and entrust is the dharma of awakening to the tathāgatagarbha. With respect to all worldly dharmas, the tathāgatagarbha, as one's own mind, never grasps at them, nor does it abandon them—neither identical nor separate. It has no mental activity belonging to the three realms, and is of unsurpassed purity.
