Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra: Volume 34 (57)

Original Text: Through this wisdom, one realizes impermanence and gives rise to the boundless resolve in impermanence. In this way, realizing suffering and so forth, one gives rise to the boundless resolve in suffering, the boundless resolve in emptiness and non-self, the boundless resolve in evil deeds, the boundless resolve in going to evil destinies, the boundless resolve in rise and fall, and the boundless resolve in old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and all disturbances and afflictions.

Explanation: Due to the wisdom of boundlessness, one realizes the impermanence of all conditioned things and gives rise to the boundless resolve in the Dharma of impermanence. In this way, having realized suffering, emptiness, impermanence, non-self, and so on, one gives rise to the boundless resolve in suffering, the boundless resolve in emptiness and non-self, the boundless resolve in evil deeds, the boundless resolve in going to evil destinies, the boundless resolve in rise and fall, and the boundless resolve in old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and all disturbances and afflictions.

Original Text: Here, "boundless" means the cycle of birth and death. Such phenomena are boundless and infinite, so much so that the cycle of birth and death does not cease. Although the aforementioned phenomena are constantly present, only birth and death can be extinguished without remainder. This can be extinguished, and there is no other means of extinction. In these various existences and destinies, in the Dharma of birth and death, through wishlessness, non-reliance, and deep aversion and renunciation, one gives rise to resolve and diligently cultivates resolve-attention.

Explanation: The meaning of "boundless" is that phenomena such as the cycle of birth and death are boundless and infinite, so much so that the cycle of birth and death does not cease. Although the aforementioned phenomena are constantly present, only birth and death can be extinguished without any remainder. This can be extinguished, and there is no other means of extinction. In these three realms and six destinies, in the Dharma of birth and death, through wishlessness, non-reliance, and deep aversion and renunciation, one gives rise to resolve and diligently cultivates resolve-attention.
