For this reason, although he deeply aspires and delights in Nirvana, his mind cannot enter into it, because the coarse conceit acts as an obstruction. Having understood that such conceit is an obstacle, he is then able to swiftly comprehend it with wisdom and abandon it. Thus, he relinquishes the spontaneously arising conceit, subsequently directs his mental application, subdues all externally perceived objects, turns towards the mental application of practice, follows the operation of mental application, and single-mindedly observes the Four Noble Truths without interruption. As the arising mind subsides, the mind that arises uninterruptedly engages in mental application and observation. The flow of skillful means continues without cessation. By thus focusing the mind on the mind with unwavering concentration and diligence, he is able to cause the mental application of entry to prevail, so that the coarse grade of conceit that obstructs direct realization has no chance to arise.
Explanation: Due to these notions within the practitioner's mind, although he deeply loves and delights in Nirvana, his mind cannot enter into it because the heavy conceit has an obstructive function. After the practitioner understands that the aforementioned conceit is an obstacle to entering Nirvana, he can swiftly comprehend it with wisdom, thereby removing the obstruction of conceit. He then abandons the previously spontaneous, self-willed arising of conceit, subsequently directs his mental application, subdues all external objects contacted by the mind, turns towards the mental application of contemplative practice, follows the operation of mental application, and single-mindedly, diligently, and uninterruptedly observes the Four Noble Truths. As the arising conceited mind ceases, the mind arises focused on uninterrupted mental application and observation, with consciousness flowing uninterruptedly within the observation of the Four Noble Truths. The practitioner, thus focusing the wisdom-mind on uninterrupted mental application with exclusive diligence and undistracted attention, immersed in the mental application of the Four Noble Truths, ensures that the heavy conceit obstructing the direct realization through immediate perception has no opportunity to arise.
