Original text:
Explanation: The cultivation of śamatha is to settle the mind in stability by means of nine methods, as explained previously. The cultivation of vipaśyanā is also as explained previously. The meaning of mundane path cultivation is that one sees the coarse characteristics in the lower realms (the desire realm) and sees the tranquil characteristics in the higher realms (the form realm and the formless realm), and can even proceed to the sphere of nothingness, being detached from desire in all realms, without attachment to desire, unobstructed in the mundane world. The meaning of supramundane path cultivation is being able to contemplate correctly that the truth of suffering is truly suffering, the truth of origination is truly origination, the truth of cessation is truly cessation, and the truth of the path is truly the path. Because of the noble, untainted path consisting of right view and so forth, one can even proceed to the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, being detached from desire in all realms, without attachment to desire, unobstructed on the supramundane path.
