The Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: One who clings to and delights in the aggregate of form clings to and delights in suffering, just as one clings to and delights in suffering itself. One who clings to and delights in suffering cannot be liberated from suffering, cannot eradicate ignorance, and cannot abandon craving. One who clings to and delights in the aggregates of feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness clings to and delights in suffering. One who clings to and delights in suffering cannot be liberated from suffering, cannot eradicate ignorance, and cannot abandon craving. Why is it that one who clings to and delights in the aggregates of form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness clings to and delights in suffering? Because clinging and delight are defiled states of mind, impure. Clinging to and delighting in the five aggregates binds one to them; the mind becomes attached and cannot be liberated. The manas (mind-base) of sentient beings possesses the affliction of self-love, clinging to their own five aggregates, unwilling to extinguish them. At the end of life, there arises an intermediate state (antarābhava). Within this intermediate state, because the manas clings to the self and seeks a physical form in the next life, it proceeds to take rebirth. Thus, the five aggregates of the next life come into being. Where there are the five aggregates, there is suffering. Birth, aging, sickness, death, and immeasurable sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair continuously arise. Therefore, clinging to and delighting in the five aggregates is clinging to and delighting in suffering. The Blessed One further addressed the bhikkhus: One who does not cling to or delight in the aggregate of form does not delight in suffering. One who does not delight in suffering can be liberated from suffering. Similarly, one who does not cling to or delight in the aggregates of feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness does not delight in suffering. One who does not delight in suffering can be liberated from suffering. The Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: Without knowing, without understanding the aggregate of form, one cannot abandon craving. Without abandoning craving, the mind cannot be liberated. If craving is not severed, if there is no liberation, one cannot end suffering, cannot be liberated from suffering. Similarly, without knowing, without understanding the aggregates of feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, one cannot abandon craving. Without abandoning craving, the mind cannot be liberated. If the mind is not liberated, one cannot end suffering. The Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: If one can know, if one can understand the aggregate of form, one can abandon craving. If one can abandon craving, the mind can be liberated. One whose mind is liberated can end suffering. Similarly, for the aggregates of feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, if one can know, if one can understand them, one can abandon craving. If one can abandon craving, the mind can be liberated. One whose mind is liberated can extinguish suffering.
