The black box is the vast world we live in. What is the black box? Briefly explained, a black box typically refers to a space that is dark, confined, sealed on all sides, and impervious to sunlight. In Buddhist teachings, it denotes the location of the sublime root at the back of the head. This area is enveloped by skin, pitch-black inside because it is not exposed externally, so light cannot reach it. Our physical eyes cannot see it; it becomes visible only during surgery or with the divine eye. Hence, we call it the black box. The so-called vast world we perceive through our senses—the six dust realms of forms, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and dharmas—all exist within that black box at the back of the head. We live inside the black box.
