The contemplation of dharmas by consciousness forms one's own thoughts, views, opinions, and understandings, which simultaneously exerts a perfuming effect on the manas (root consciousness). The process of contemplation can perfume the manas, and focused contemplation by consciousness can penetrate deeply into the mind of the manas, making the perfuming effect more pronounced. If it captures the attention and serious consideration of the manas, this constitutes the initial effect; if the manas generates vigilance and contemplation, the effect becomes more pronounced; if the contemplation of the manas is focused and deep, and moreover in accordance with the Dharma and principles, the perfuming effect becomes even more evident; if the manas' contemplation gains clarity and direction, the effect manifests; if the manas contemplates the essence of the Dharma and makes preliminary discernments, the true effect emerges; if the manas arrives at a very clear and principled conclusion, firmly affirms its contemplation, and makes corresponding discernments and judgments, it can be said that the perfuming is successful. Once the manas is transformed, all subsequent mental activities and actions will change, revolving around the judgments and choices of the manas; then it is fully ingrained.
