The eighth consciousness can neither precede nor follow. Otherwise, the eighth consciousness could operate independently within the three realms, and the seventh consciousness, the mental faculty, could also function autonomously within the three realms. However, this is impossible. Neither the true mind nor the deluded mind can operate alone; they must function together in harmony. If the seventh consciousness could operate independently, it would not need the eighth consciousness to give birth to it and sustain it. In that case, it would possess self-nature and would be an indestructible dharma. If the eighth consciousness could operate independently, it would not be tranquil in the state of nirvana without residue. Phenomena of the three realms would still be produced, rendering nirvana without residue tumultuous. Tumult would mean there is no liberation.
