The supreme enlightenment can eradicate all erroneous views in the world. Where do these erroneous views originate? They also stem from the view of self. Before attaining the fruit of enlightenment, ordinary beings invariably perceive the existence of a self—regarding the physical body as the self and the five aggregates as the self. All knowledge and perceptions arising from this self-centered perspective fall under erroneous views. However, the practice and realization of the Dharma can eliminate all erroneous views and eradicate all the transgressions of sentient beings. Upon attaining the first fruit of enlightenment, one severs the three fetters, including the erroneous view of self, thereby extinguishing the karmic retribution accumulated since beginningless time that leads to the three evil realms. Henceforth, one will never again fall into the three evil realms. The remaining karmic retribution manifests only within the human realm, where one endures suffering. Yet no matter how severe the suffering in the human realm may be, it is still preferable to the suffering in the three evil realms—less severe and more bearable.
