The Profound Meaning of Consciousness-Only in the Diamond Sutra (95)

Original Text: Subhuti, if a good man or good woman, in the latter evil age, receives, upholds, reads, and recites this sutra, the merits attained thereby—if I were to describe them in detail—some people, upon hearing it, would become mentally agitated, harbor doubts, and fail to believe. Subhuti, you should know that the meaning of this sutra is inconceivable, and its karmic retribution is also inconceivable.

Explanation: The World-Honored One said: Subhuti, if there is a good man or good woman who, in the latter evil age when the Dharma is nearing extinction, is able to receive, uphold, read, and recite this Diamond Sutra, cultivating their own mind by relying on the Tathagata-garbha Reality Dharma, the merits they attain are exceedingly great. If I were to explain in detail what kind of merits this person actually obtains, how much they are, and specifically what they consist of, then some people, upon hearing me speak thus, would become mentally agitated, filled with doubt, and unable to believe. This shows that the merits of receiving and upholding the Diamond Sutra are too supreme for ordinary people to imagine or believe.

Subhuti, from this we should know how inconceivably profound and unfathomable the profound Dharma meaning within this Diamond Sutra is. Furthermore, the karmic retribution of receiving and upholding this sutra is also inconceivable. Because by studying and practicing according to the principles within the Diamond Sutra, realizing this Prajna Reality Mind, one's blessings and wisdom will gradually increase and expand, with wisdom becoming ever more profound and unparalleled. When both blessings and wisdom are perfectly complete, one will become the supreme being and the supreme honored one within the Triple Realm. This karmic retribution is truly inconceivable and beyond comprehension; the extent of this retribution and merit is indeed ineffable and beyond praise for countless kalpas.
