The diligent are able to ponder issues even at midnight, while the indolent fail to reflect even during the day. It is evident that true diligence lies in the vigilance of the mental faculty, which operates ceaselessly regardless of day or night. The diligence of consciousness, however, is intermittent and cannot sustain contemplation at night. Even during the day, if the mental faculty focuses only on trivial matters, consciousness remains incapable of diligence, for it cannot escape the direction of the mental faculty.
