The Consequences of Craving

In the earliest formation of Earth, there were no sentient beings, no humans. Devas from the Abhasvara Heaven (Second Dhyana Heaven) flew down to the Earth's surface. After landing on it, they saw the thick, rich soil (difei) covering the ground and thought it looked delicious. Out of curiosity, each of the devas tasted it. As a result of tasting this delicious substance once or twice, their bodies became heavy. Some could no longer fly, others could only fly low or short distances. The more they ate, the heavier their bodies became, and the less they could fly. Thus, these devas remained on Earth, unable to return to the heavens. Being few in number and afraid of loneliness, they called upon other deva companions. When these companions came to Earth and also tasted the rich soil, they too became unable to fly back. Consequently, more and more beings gathered on Earth, and these beings became the very first humans on the planet.

Whom can you afford to owe? What can you afford to crave? Once a karmic bond is formed, it binds you together; the connection becomes inseparable. Some people live by the philosophy: Eat when you can, eat whatever you desire, it's wasteful not to eat what's available. Do you know the consequences of such greed?
