It is easy to alter the rivers and mountains, but hard to change one's fundamental nature. "Easy to alter the rivers and mountains" refers to the conscious mind; "hard to change one's fundamental nature" refers to the fundamental nature. As long as the fundamental nature remains unchanged, no dharma can alter it; it persists as before. If the fundamental nature is not transformed, even if the rivers and mountains are altered, they will revert and be reborn again.
The five great seeds are eternally immutable and perpetually exist, including the seed of consciousness and the seed of perception. For karmic seeds to be transformed, the fundamental nature must first change; if the fundamental nature does not change, the karmic seeds cannot be altered. Therefore, to eliminate karma, one must eradicate the ignorance within the fundamental nature; only then can karma be dissolved. Karma arises solely from the ignorance of the fundamental nature; without ignorance, there is no karma. To remove the ignorance of the fundamental nature, the fundamental nature must recognize truth and reality, eradicate the view of self, and realize the true nature. To eliminate specific karmic obstacles, the fundamental nature must repent; conscious repentance is ineffective.
