Selected Lectures on the Sūtra of the Collection of the Father and Son (Pitāputrasamāgamanasūtra) (86)

Original text:

Explanation: The Buddha said: Great King, it is indeed so. Foolish ordinary beings (pṛthagjana), in a dream being pressed by hunger, eat food of bitter taste, and their minds give rise to anger and vexation, thereby creating such karmic actions—three bodily actions, four verbal actions, and three mental actions. After those karmas are created, they immediately cease and pass away. After those karmas have ceased, they do not abide in the east, south, west, or north, the four intermediate directions, above, below, or in between. But at the final limit, when the life faculty ceases, the karmic retributions of one's own karmas all manifest in front of one, just like awakening from a dream and still recollecting the events within the dream.

Original text:

Explanation: Great King, the ālayavijñāna is the master that gives birth to the five-aggregate body of future lives, and the karmic seeds serve as the object condition (ālambana-pratyaya). When these two kinds of causes and conditions come together, the initial consciousness of the next life is born. Sentient beings either proceed to the hells, or fall into the destinies of animals or the realm of Yama (the ghost realm)—the three evil destinies; or they are reborn in the three good destinies: the asura destiny, the human destiny, and the heavenly destiny. After the initial consciousness is born, sentient beings each begin to receive their karmic retribution, and then the consciousness on the same material body continues to run on without interruption. When consciousness ceases at the end of life, the material body becomes a corpse, which is called the aggregates of death; the consciousness that first arises on the material body is called the initial consciousness, and the five aggregates of the material body are called the aggregates of birth.
