The mind capable of reasoning and inference is the Consciousness. During reasoning and inference, the conscious thought operating on the surface is the Consciousness. Simultaneously, however, the Manas (mind-root) functions deeply in the background, profoundly deliberating. Both consciousnesses operate concurrently; without the Manas, the Consciousness cannot engage in reasoning. When concentration is somewhat established, the Manas possesses greater strength and engages in its own deliberative mental activity. Only then can correct conclusions be derived, and the Manas will firmly affirm these conclusions.
During dreaming, it is the Isolated Consciousness that cognizes the dream within the dream state. Upon awakening, the Sense-Accompanied Consciousness awakens first, followed by the appearance of the five sense consciousnesses. When recalling a dream, it is the Isolated Consciousness that performs the recollection. This Isolated Consciousness differs somewhat from the Isolated Consciousness active within the dream itself. Combined with the limitations of memory, this results in the Isolated Consciousness being unable to recall the dream completely and clearly.
