The Eighth Consciousness Is the Self, Yet Has No-Self Nature; the Sixth and Seventh Consciousnesses Are Not the Self, Yet Have Self-Nature.

Original text of the Nirvana Sutra: 又解脱者，名断一切有为之法，出生一切无漏善法，断塞诸道，所谓若我无我、非我非无我。唯断取著，不断我见。我见者名为佛性，佛性者即真解脱，真解脱者即是如来。

Explanation: What is called liberation means having severed all conditioned dharmas of the world, giving rise to all wholesome dharmas free from the afflictions of greed, hatred, and delusion, and cutting off and blocking all the channels of conditioned dharmas within the threefold world. These untainted wholesome dharmas are either self (the eighth consciousness) or non-self (what the sixth and seventh consciousnesses realize), neither self (the sixth and seventh consciousnesses) nor non-self (the eighth consciousness). "Self" refers, first, to the eighth consciousness, and second, to the sixth and seventh consciousnesses. "Non-self" likewise refers, first, to the eighth consciousness, and second, to the sixth and seventh consciousnesses.

Before enlightenment, the sixth and seventh consciousnesses regard self as self; after enlightenment, the sixth and seventh consciousnesses are non-self and without self, and the eighth consciousness is taken as self. Although the eighth consciousness is taken as self, the eighth consciousness is also without self; it lacks the self-nature, the masterly nature, the grasping nature, and the nature of ignorance that the sixth and seventh consciousnesses possess.

To summarize: the eighth consciousness is self yet possesses the nature of non-self, while the sixth and seventh consciousnesses are non-self yet possess the nature of self. After the sixth and seventh consciousnesses eradicate the view of self, they are without self, knowing that self is non-self; after seeing the mind, they gradually take the eighth consciousness as self, and their self-nature gradually diminishes.

In this way, only the grasping at the conditioned dharmas of the five aggregates has been severed, and the view of self has not been eradicated. This view of self refers to one's own true suchness, the buddha-nature—the nature by which the eighth consciousness becomes a Buddha. This is true liberation, and true liberation is the Tathāgata.
