Realization occurs when both consciousness and the manas discover truth and reality. Truth is the objective aspect (ālambana), the act of discovering is the subjective aspect (dṛṣṭi), and discovering truth constitutes self-cognizing awareness (svasaṃvedana), not self-verifying awareness (svasaṃvitti).
Whether realization can be attained depends on the wisdom and cognitive capacity of the manas itself, as well as the depth of wrong views accumulated by the manas throughout beginningless kalpas—not solely on the ability of consciousness to gather evidence, data, and engage in analytical thinking.
When the habitual tendency of greed within the manas manifests, it must be expressed through the six consciousnesses. Consciousness may sometimes awaken and resist, though not necessarily successfully; at other times, consciousness remains unawakened and offers no resistance.
