What Is Merit?

Merit is the beneficial function of wisdom; with wisdom, one can dissolve karmic obstructions. Eliminating self-view (ahaṃkāra-mamakāra-parityāga) and seeing one's true mind will eliminate the karma leading to the three evil destinies. Wisdom-based repentance also carries merit and can dissolve karmic obstructions. Throughout the process of cultivation, the growth of wisdom can dissolve karma to varying degrees; when unwholesome karma is completely exhausted, one attains buddhahood.
