Manifestations of the Manas Being Stirred

Struck speechless with shock—what is going on? Dumbfounded with fright—what is going on? So angry as to be wordless—what is going on?

When the manas receives a rather strong shock and becomes overly agitated with an intense reaction, it becomes immersed in the state of the event, with no time or mood to direct the mind consciousness to speak and express itself; language feels utterly powerless, or one does not know what to say, so the mind consciousness takes a rest for the moment, and the manas has no attention to spare for it. When the manas is frightened, it can no longer attend to the five sense faculties and the six consciousnesses: the eyes have no attention for seeing, the ears no attention for hearing, the nose no attention for smelling, the tongue no attention for tasting, the body no attention for touching, the mind no attention for. When the mind consciousness is frightened but the manas is not, the behavior is much the same as usual: the manas can still continue to regulate the five sense faculties and six consciousnesses so that they do whatever they should do, and one will not appear blank and stunned. When the manas is angry, the mind is immersed in the event, occupied solely with anger, and has no energy or mood to regulate the mind consciousness to express anything. When the mind consciousness is angry but the manas is not, the manas still regulates the five sense faculties and six consciousnesses to do whatever they should do, and nothing is affected.
