Whatever dharmas the six consciousnesses may possess must exist under the condition that the six consciousnesses themselves exist. If the six consciousnesses themselves do not exist, how can there be any talk of possessing dharmas? For example, without the person Zhang San, one cannot speak of Zhang San possessing any objects; without a house, do not discuss what is inside the house. Similarly, when the six consciousnesses do not exist during sleep, do not discuss the six consciousnesses possessing the dharma of sleep. Whose dharma, then, is sleep? It is the dharma of manas (the mind faculty). Although manas does not sleep, manas requires sleep based on the body's condition to resolve issues of bodily fatigue and drowsiness. If there is no sleep, the body becomes exhausted, and manas cannot properly utilize the six consciousnesses to accomplish various tasks. This means that sleep is required by manas, determined by manas, and is an active behavioral choice made by manas. The purpose of manas choosing sleep is to enable the five aggregates body (pañcaskandha) to function better. If the five aggregates body experiences no fatigue or exhaustion, manas would allow it to continue operating without cessation; celestial beings (devas) are like this. Therefore, it is said that sleep corresponds to manas, not to the six consciousnesses. Only when the six consciousnesses cease does sleep occur.
