In the Shurangama Sutra, when discussing the delusion of imaginary thinking, it is said that imagining oneself standing on the edge of a cliff causes tingling in the soles of the feet. When imagining sour plums, saliva flows in the mouth. All these are deluded thoughts, deceived by external conditions. The six dusts (objects of sense) we encounter are all mistaken as belonging to ourselves, resulting in being bound and obstructed by these six dusts, unable to attain freedom. Since beginningless kalpas, we have been deceiving ourselves, leading to utterly miserable consequences. Since beginningless kalpas, we have taken this physical body to be our self, resulting in being constrained by the physical body without freedom, suffering boundless afflictions. It is all due to deluded thoughts running rampant, wasting our lives in vain.
