The Wisdom State of Anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti

Volume 449 of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra states (T07, No. 220, p. 264b): "Such non-retrogressing bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, contemplating all dharmas with the emptiness of inherent characteristics, have entered the correct nature free from birth [of the bodhisattva path]. They do not perceive even the slightest dharma as obtainable. Because nothing is obtainable, there is nothing created. Because nothing is created, ultimately nothing arises. Because ultimately nothing arises, it is called the patience of the non-arising of dharmas. By attaining such patience of the non-arising of dharmas, they are called non-retrogressing bodhisattva-mahāsattvas."

This passage explains that the bodhisattva, contemplating the emptiness of all dharmas, enters the Path of Seeing at the First Ground, initially realizing the principle that all dharmas ultimately do not arise. This realization is called the patience of the non-arising of dharmas.

Explanation: After enlightenment upon realizing the mind, the non-retrogressing bodhisattva observes that the characteristics of their own five aggregates and eighteen elements are empty. Expanding from this perspective, they observe that all other dharmas are also empty, never truly born, and that not a single dharma in the world can be obtained. The bodhisattva who can contemplate thus truly attains the realization that all dharmas are empty and non-arising, equivalent to the liberation state of a fourth-fruition Arhat. Because all dharmas are unobtainable, all dharmas are also uncreated; because they are uncreated, all dharmas ultimately do not arise and have never arisen. Because they have realized that all dharmas ultimately do not arise and have accepted this principle, it is called the patience of the non-arising of dharmas. By attaining this patience of the non-arising of dharmas, they become irreversible on the supreme path of bodhi and forever walk the bodhisattva path.

The patience of non-arising (anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti) only knows the emptiness of the self (person) within the five aggregates. The patience of the non-arising of dharmas (anutpattikadharmakṣānti) not only realizes the emptiness of the self within the five aggregates but also realizes the emptiness of all dharmas. Its scope is extremely broad and its depth profoundly profound. It is beyond comparison with bodhisattvas below the First Ground or Arhats. Bodhisattvas above the First Ground, because they possess the wisdom of the patience of the non-arising of dharmas, do not engage in worldly affairs except for cultivation and propagating the Dharma. They do not act for worldly benefits, nor do they delight in fame, reputation, gain, or offerings; their single-minded focus is on the Buddha Way.
