(36) Original text: 问。几支灭是缘尽所显。答。即此三是。余支缘故。 

Explanation: How many links, when they cease, are manifested by the exhaustion of conditions? Answer: The cessation of the three links—existence (bhava), birth (jāti), and aging-and-death (jarā-maraṇa)—is what is manifested by the exhaustion of conditions. When the conditions of the three realms are exhausted, existence in the three realms will no longer appear; birth ceases, and there is no more aging-and-death. Apart from these three links, even though the other links have ceased, the conditions with the three realms have not been completely severed—conditions still exist. For example, through contemplating the twelve links of dependent origination, ignorance (avidyā) is extinguished, but there are still conditions with the three realms, so the manas still has volitional formations (saṃskāra); it is merely that the formations of ignorance have been extinguished in favor of enlightened formations. The six consciousnesses still exist, merely as six consciousnesses without ignorance, performing bodily, verbal, and mental actions that are enlightened and no longer defiled. 

There is still name-and-form (nāma-rūpa) existing, merely name-and-form without ignorance; there is still the six sense bases (ṣaḍāyatana) existing, merely no longer defiled; there is still contact (sparśa) existing, merely contact with ignorance extinguished—enlightened contact; there is still feeling (vedanā) existing, merely feeling with ignorance extinguished; perhaps there is still craving (tṛṣṇā) existing, merely craving with ignorance extinguished—craving the Buddha-dharma and craving the cultivation of the Mahāyāna path, that is all; there is still grasping (upādāna) existing, merely grasping with ignorance extinguished—grasping the Mahāyāna Buddha-dharma and wholesome dharmas, that is all; there are still dharmas of the three realms existing, merely without craving attachment to the dharmas of the three realms; there is still aging-and-death existing, merely with residual suffering remaining, not so much suffering and pain. Mahāyāna bodhisattvas and pratyekabuddhas will still have birth in future lives; in the present life they still have the twelve enlightened links, but no longer the twelve links of ignorance. 

Original text: 问。几支灭是受尽所显。答。一。谓由烦恼已断故。所依灭时。此一切受。皆永息灭故。 

Explanation: Question: How many links, when they cease, are the links manifested by the exhaustion of feeling? Answer: Only the cessation of the single link of feeling is the dharma manifested by the exhaustion of feeling. Because the afflictions have already been completely severed, when the dharmas upon which feeling depends all cease, then all these feelings will be forever extinguished.
