Only when the consciousness-seeds give rise to functions do the five aggregates manifest their functional activities; without this arising, the functions of the five aggregates cease. Are all these functions of the five aggregates then real? Are they me? Am I thus rigidly confined and controlled? Am I subject to constant arising and ceasing? Can such elusive functions of the five aggregates truly constitute the real me?
Can the five aggregates, which sustain life only through eating and face death by starvation without food, be me? Can the five aggregates, which maintain vital activities only with air and cease functioning without it, be me? Can the five aggregates, which enable walking, standing, sitting, and lying only when nourished with qi and blood but become rigid like wood when depleted, be me? Constrained rigidly by various causal conditions, can such five aggregates be me? Why should one cherish and treasure such a body of five aggregates that lacks autonomy and self-mastery?
