Memory is the unique functional role of consciousness, facilitated by the volition of manas. Why can manas engage in volition and decide to make consciousness recall? Because manas can remember the things experienced, then thinks to distinguish details, thus when the sense faculty and object contact, consciousness arises and recalls the experienced phenomena. If manas does not engage or decide to distinguish the experienced phenomena, there is no birth of consciousness and no memory. Therefore, memory is not only a function of consciousness, but also a function of manas; if manas does not remember, it cannot contact, and thus cannot recall. Manas only makes simple, rough, and generalized memories, while consciousness remembers in a more detailed, clear, and specific manner.
