Because sentient beings regard the aggregate of feeling as the self, cling to the aggregate of feeling, and for the sake of their inner sensations, give rise to greed and hatred, thereby creating immeasurable and boundless karmic offenses. If they do not regard the aggregate of feeling as the self, do not cling to the aggregate of feeling, do not crave agreeable feelings, and do not resent disagreeable feelings, they will not give rise to greed or hatred, nor will they create unwholesome karma, all without their conscious awareness.
The most prominent characteristic of sentient beings in the Saha world is greed, hatred, and delusion; the most common affliction in the human realm of the desire realm is greed. Although they have studied the Buddhadharma, understand some karmic cause and effect, and know that greed is the root cause of sinking into the cycle of birth and death, due to heavy karmic obstructions, they are still unable to subdue their greed. Whether lay practitioners or monastics, subduing all afflictions is extremely, extremely difficult. Because through immeasurable kalpas of birth and death, the habitual tendencies have become deeply ingrained, making them exceedingly difficult to shake even slightly.
