Some individuals may possess consciousness elevated to the realm of an eighth-stage bodhisattva, yet the cultivation of their manas (mind faculty) remains stagnant at the level of an ordinary being. Why such a vast discrepancy? It is precisely because they have never practiced meditation. They do not carefully contemplate within meditative concentration the content roughly understood by consciousness, nor do they immerse the manas within concentration for refinement. Consequently, the manas remains as ignorant as before, and all their actions inevitably correspond to this ignorance of the manas; what consciousness speaks of can never be actualized.
Thus, it is evident that meditation (dhyāna) is of paramount importance. Meditation is the platform for communication between consciousness and manas; it is the bridge through which consciousness transmits theoretical knowledge to manas; it is the channel by which consciousness provides data and information to manas; it is the venue where consciousness submits evidence to manas; it is the indispensable nourishment for the manas to undergo refinement and comprehend truth; meditation is the tranquilizer that subdues the manas.
The Buddha's teaching of the Three Non-Outflow Studies (precepts, concentration, and wisdom) holds profound significance. The Buddha does not deceive us. The Buddha is one who speaks truthfully, speaks reality, and speaks without inconsistency. The Buddha is the embodiment of great wisdom, immeasurable wisdom, and supreme wisdom. If one believes and accepts the Buddha's words, one will certainly attain Buddhahood.
