How to Eradicate Lust in Contemplative Practice

Question: In contemplative practice (vipaśyanā-caryā), how does one eradicate sexual desire?

Answer: Before attaining realization of the fruits, sexual desire can only be subdued and suppressed, not eradicated. Subduing sexual desire can be done in the following ways: First, rely on the power of meditative concentration (samādhi). With meditative concentration, body and mind become tranquil and at ease, the mind is filled and content, thoughts are few, and if one cultivates to the point of having abundant essence and vitality, one will no longer dwell on sexual desire. Second, contemplate in accordance with the Dharma the various perils of birth-and-death (saṃsāra) brought about by sexual desire, and its impurity; this can lessen thoughts of sexual desire. Third, redirect one's attention and devote one's energy to the most meaningful pursuits, leaving oneself no idle time, and the desire will fade. Fourth, stay away from impure environments and places, and create a pure place for practice. Fifth, recite the Śūraṅgama Mantra every day, relying on the blessing power of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Dharma-protecting deities to subdue sexual desire.
