Buddha comes, demons retreat.

The more diligent you are, the greater the demons you encounter. The greater the demon, the greater the wisdom after it is subdued. Great demons lurk only in the extremely subtle places, while small demons are right before your eyes. Turn your contemplation back upon itself, and all Buddhas stand before you. When the Buddha comes, the demons retreat. Board the sturdy Dharma ship and carry all dharmas across to the other shore.

"All Buddhas stand before you" — how wonderful these words are! Only those who have seen the mind and attained realization can truly understand this principle, and only then can they see the Buddha at all times, without seeing anything else.

Why is it that when the Buddha comes, the demons retreat?

All dharmas are without practice — with a single slap I knock you all down: the Buddha comes, the demons retreat. Is there anyone still unconvinced?
