The Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra: Volume 34 (77)

If previously one has not obtained the superior wholesome dharmas, through practice one causes them to be obtained; this is called "acquisition through practice". If previously one has already obtained them, through practice one causes them to manifest presently; this is called "familiarization through practice". If previously one has already obtained them but has not caused them to manifest presently, yet by practicing dharmas of that kind, one causes them to manifest presently, causes them to become purified, freshly and purely arising; this is called "purification through practice". If due to loss of mindfulness, defiled dharmas arise, through the power of practicing wholesome dharmas, one causes the mind not to endure them, cuts them off and expels them; this is called "expulsion through practice".

Explanation: If previously one has not obtained the superior wholesome dharmas, through practice one obtains them; this is called "acquisition through practice". If previously one has already obtained the wholesome dharmas, through practice, one causes the wholesome dharmas to manifest and appear; this is called "familiarization through practice". If previously one has already obtained the wholesome dharmas but has not caused them to manifest presently, yet by practicing dharmas of that kind, one causes them to manifest presently, causes them to become more purified, freshly and purely arising; this is called "purification through practice". If due to loss of mindfulness, defiled dharmas arise, because of the power of practicing wholesome dharmas, the mind cannot endure the defiled dharmas, thus cuts them off and expels them; this is called "expulsion through practice".
