Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, Volume 34 (78)

Original: If the factors to be eliminated have not yet arisen, through the power of cultivating wholesome dharmas, one understands them as like a disease, generating profound revulsion towards them. One understands them as like a boil, like an arrow, obstructing the understanding of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, thus generating profound revulsion. This is known as knowing through cultivation. Having understood the nature of the factors to be eliminated in this way, through repeated cultivation, the uninterrupted path arises, cutting off all afflictions. This is known as cutting off through cultivation. Having cut off the afflictions, one attains liberation. This is known as attaining through cultivation. As one progressively advances towards the wholesome dharmas of higher stages, in this way, the factors of the lower stages that have already been cut off become increasingly distant, until they are ultimately distant. This is known as distance through cultivation. It should be understood that these are the eight kinds of cultivation practices.

Explanation: If the factors that should be eliminated have not yet arisen, through the power of cultivating wholesome dharmas, one understands the factors that should be eliminated as being like a disease, generating deep revulsion in the mind. One understands the factors that should be eliminated as being like a boil, like a poisonous arrow, obstructing the wisdom of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, and thus generates revulsion in the deep mind. This is called knowing through cultivation. After thus understanding the nature of the factors that should be eliminated, due to the cause of repeatedly cultivating, the uninterrupted path arises, cutting off all afflictions. This is called cutting off through cultivation. Having cut off the afflictions, one attains liberation, called attaining through cultivation. Just as one progressively advances towards the wholesome dharmas of higher stages, just so one causes the afflictions of the lower stages to be cut off, and the dharmas of the lower stages transform into factors that are increasingly distant, even to the point of ultimate remoteness. This is called distance through cultivation. The above are the eight kinds of cultivation practices.
