The deeper the meditative concentration, the more effectively the faculty of the mind can be employed; the shallower the meditative concentration, the weaker the faculty of the mind becomes. Regression or non-regression lies in the faculty of the mind. When the faculty of the mind earnestly investigates and contemplates on its own to seek answers, once it reaches a conclusion, it becomes utterly convinced and harbors no doubt, for everyone trusts themselves the most.
Therefore, with less effort, realization is shallow, doubts cannot be fully severed, and regression is likely to occur in the future. If the faculty of the mind does not attain realization, not a trace of doubt can be eliminated; this does not constitute realization and cannot sever the fetters. Hence, the issue of regression does not even arise. If one is investigating the Tathāgatagarbha (Buddha-nature), the issue of reliance upon and transformation into the Tathāgatagarbha also does not arise, for without realization, how can one rely? Without reliance, transformation is impossible. Without progress, there can be no regression. Merely dabbling in illusions with the conscious mind, one suffers greatly at the time of death. Will regret come too late?
