be it as a sovereign ruler, or as a chancellor and prime minister; be it born into a family of nobility and prestige, or possessing abundant wealth and autonomy; be it as a great elder, or as a wealthy merchant magnate; or be it attaining a celestial body to enjoy heavenly blessings—all these arise because the ālaya-vijñāna stores the seeds of meritorious karma. Nourished by merit, the ālaya-vijñāna manifests a karmically blessed body, reaping joyful retribution. Just as one with supreme merit becomes possessed by a celestial deity, corresponding to the deity’s retribution, such a person enjoys sublime fragrant flowers, fragrant and delicious food and drink, and experiences profound joy. If the possessed person was ill, the illness vanishes, for celestial beings never fall ill and will not permit the person to become ill again. The possessed person now gains the retribution of noble status, wealth, and autonomy. It should be understood that all this is due to the merit accumulated in past lives nourishing the ālaya-vijñāna, resulting in the present body of five aggregates attaining joyful karmic fruition.
