Original text: Xianhu, for those possessed by inferior evil spirits such as Fudanna, they come to love filth and grime, rotten and putrid things, nasal mucus, saliva, and all unclean objects. By offering these in sacrifice, they are cured and rejoice. Such a person, through the spirit's power and according to the spirit's desires, delights in the unclean, stinking, decaying, and filthy. The consciousness nurtured by sin is likewise. They may be reborn into poverty, or into the realm of hungry ghosts and among the filth-eating animals—various evil destinies. Through the consciousness nurtured by sin, the body obtains the karmic fruit of suffering.
Explanation: The Buddha said, Xianhu, if a person is possessed by inferior evil spirits like Fudanna, this being will love places of filth and excrement, places that are decaying and foul, places with nasal mucus and saliva—they will love unclean things like mucus and saliva. If unclean objects like these are used to make offerings to the spirits, this person's illness and suffering will disappear, for the spirits can repay this person by curing their illness through supernatural powers. Those spirits with meager merit must even compete for a single mouthful of spittle; for spirits, saliva is a delicacy, nasal mucus is also a delicacy, and there are ghosts without merit who come to devour filth and grime. These spirits with scant merit all attained this retribution because when they were alive as humans, they refused to practice generosity and were inherently miserly. If a person is controlled by spirits, they do whatever the spirits wish through them and love whatever the spirits love, because their mind is controlled by the spirits and acts involuntarily. Sentient beings create sinful karma; the seeds of sin are stored in the ālaya consciousness, and the beings manifested by the ālaya consciousness are exactly like this—they love lowly, inferior, filthy places of excrement and grime. Because such a person does not cultivate merit, their ālaya consciousness lacks karmic merit and is full of sinful karma. This causes the being to be reborn either into a poor family, or into the hungry ghost realm where they devour foul and unclean matter, or into the animal realm where all animals eat unclean food. Being born into these three evil destinies is entirely due to the result of the ālaya consciousness being nurtured by sin; thus, the ālaya consciousness causes their five-aggregate body to obtain such karmic fruits of suffering.
