Question: A child's consciousness is new, but the mental faculty (manas) is already a "seasoned veteran." When a child looks at the ceiling, they should know that it is the ceiling; they know the "name" but do not know the "word." The Tathāgatagarbha has not implanted the seed of "word," so the child cannot say what it is. Is this correct?
Answer: For a child to know that it is the ceiling, they must go through learning; someone must tell them that it is the ceiling for them to know. However, before learning to speak, they cannot express it; they lack verbal expression. When consciousness learns to express, due to differences in language seeds, each child's manner and method of verbal expression differ, leading to different effects. Some express clearly and endearingly, while others express unclearly.
Seeds require encountering conditions to manifest. When conditions are not yet complete, the seeds temporarily do not function. For language seeds to manifest, the condition of consciousness learning environmental knowledge is required. When consciousness does not yet possess worldly knowledge, the language seeds do not function.
