If causality belongs to this world, then it is the most impartial of all: good deeds bring good retribution, and evil deeds bring evil retribution. When the time comes, the karmic results manifest, and there is no escape. Some say viruses are the most impartial, infecting people regardless of wealth, status, power, gender, or age. Yet some remain uninfected and do not fall ill. Death, however, is different—all people must die without exception. Those who attain the four dhyanas may prolong their lifespan, but ultimately, they too will extinguish the five aggregates. The Buddha could remain in the world for great kalpas or even immeasurable kalpas, yet he too would eventually relinquish his position and depart from the land he established.
