What Are the Obstacles Encountered in Buddhist Study and Practice?

Delusion obstruction refers to confusion in thoughts and concepts, which is also the obstruction of afflictive delusions. Karma obstruction is the karmic retribution hindrance arising from the countless karmic actions created over immeasurable kalpas. Habit obstruction stems from the ingrained worldly habits accumulated over immeasurable kalpas; these habitual forces are extremely powerful. Demon obstruction includes hindrances set by celestial demons and the obstructions arising from one's own mind, such as afflictive demons. Those who lack the ability to transcend the Desire Realm are not disturbed by celestial demons, as they deem it unnecessary; often, it is the afflictive demonic hindrances arising from each individual's own mind.

These obstructions constantly follow practitioners of Buddhism. When one is not diligent, they are not obvious. However, when one diligently applies effort and makes progress on the Path, these obscurations become very apparent, and one feels significant resistance. It is like walking on foot: although there is wind blowing around, it feels like a gentle breeze. When riding a bicycle, the wind feels slightly stronger, but it poses no major hindrance. When riding a motorcycle, however, the wind resistance becomes substantial—the faster the speed, the greater the perceived resistance, due to the impact force between objects. The same applies to Buddhist practice: there is an impact force against the habitual tendencies accumulated over immeasurable kalpas, and the more diligently one practices, the greater the resistance encountered. If one possesses unwavering perseverance and does not fear obstacles, one's progress on the Path will continuously advance, leading to rapid and significant accomplishment.
