When iron filings fly toward the eyes, they are swiftly blocked by the rapid closing of the eyelids, preventing any harm to the eyes. The emergency and rapid closing of the eyes are actions determined and commanded at lightning speed by the manas. Truly, the manas is remarkable, serving as the first line of defense in protecting the physical body. Without this protective mechanism of the manas, it would be difficult to say how long each aggregate body could survive.
Although gratitude is due to the manas for this, the greatest thanks should be directed to the tathāgatagarbha. The swift healing of bodily injuries results entirely from the tathāgatagarbha’s regulation of the four great elements. Without the tathāgatagarbha, the manas would be powerless to realize any of its intentions, let alone protect the physical body or restore it to health—that would be impossible. Therefore, the tathāgatagarbha is the most venerable and beloved, selfless and without ego. The manas cherishes the various functions of the tathāgatagarbha and, relying on its support, acts imperiously, yet mistakenly attributes all the credit to itself.
