Do no evil, practice all good deeds, purify your own mind — this is the teaching of all Buddhas. Whether one does evil or refrains from doing evil is decided by the manas as the master; likewise, whether one does good or refrains from doing good is also decided by the manas as the master. If one refrains from all evil, the manas must eradicate all afflictions, and must also eradicate all habitual tendencies of afflictions. At this point, one must at minimum cultivate to the level of an eighth-bhūmi bodhisattva, having already ended segmented birth-and-death (pariccheda-maraṇa).
As for being able to practice all good deeds, one must not only extensively make the pure great vows of a bodhisattva, but also carry them out broadly and earnestly. Whenever one encounters the conditions to engage in endeavors that can benefit sentient beings, one must do them, paying no heed whatsoever to personal gain. Only in this way can one receive great benefit in return as a personal reward, because in sacrificing oneself for others, one actually still benefits oneself, ultimately attaining buddhahood.
As for purifying one's own mind, at the very beginning the mind consciousness can manage to purify its own mind, but it is often still contaminated by the manas. The mind consciousness purifying its own mind is not yet ultimate, so one must then permeate the manas and purify the mind of the manas. Once the mind of the manas is purified, all bodily, verbal, and mental actions will necessarily be pure, and the defiled seeds will all be replaced with pure seeds. Thus ignorance is completely eradicated, and the Buddha Way is accomplished. The above is what all Buddhas have taught; may we follow the teachings of all Buddhas, believe, accept, and practice them!
