What Constitutes Right Mindfulness of In-Breath, Right Mindfulness of Out-Breath, and Abiding in Right Mindfulness?

For the Dharma currently being contemplated, being able to focus single-mindedly without scattered thoughts is right mindfulness. Right mindfulness is the awareness that should be maintained in the present moment, the awareness consistent with the current object of contemplation, and it is also immediate awareness. For example, when contemplating the in-breath, the entire attention is focused solely on the in-breath—from the beginning when the breath enters through the nostrils, until it reaches the dantian (lower abdomen). The entire process is observed with undivided, single-minded focus, merely observing objectively and simply, without any mental activities such as thinking, analysis, reasoning, or imagination. It is pure knowing; other phenomena are disregarded, no attention is paid to them, and bodily sensations are not observed either. The mind does not dwell on sensations but remains solely on the in-breath. The same applies during the out-breath; this is the approach for both in-breath and out-breath. Practicing any other Dharma should follow this same principle. Only this is correct; only this is the proper and reasoned method of diligent practice. With unified concentration and balanced wisdom, unwavering and impartial, can one enter the path.
