Question: How to eliminate lust during meditative practice?
Answer: Before attaining the fruition of enlightenment, lust can only be subdued and suppressed, not completely eradicated. Subduing lust relies on several methods: First, through the power of meditative concentration. With deep meditation, body and mind become light and at ease, the inner being is filled, and distracting thoughts diminish. If one cultivates to the point of being full of vital energy, thoughts of lust cease to arise. Second, by contemplating the various karmic faults and sufferings in the cycle of birth and death caused by lust, and by reflecting on its impurity, one can reduce lustful thoughts. Third, by diverting attention and channeling energy into the most meaningful activities, leaving no idle time, thereby diminishing lustful desires. Fourth, by avoiding impure environments and creating pure places for practice. Fifth, by reciting the Shurangama Mantra daily, relying on the blessing power of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Dharma-protecting deities to subdue lust.
