Q&A on the Contemplation of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness: Part 7

Question: During meditation, I merely observe the breath, trying not to actively guide it. Suddenly, I faintly perceive that this respiratory system is like an automated mechanism, slightly feeling like a piece of lifeless flesh. What is this phenomenon?

Answer: This is the progress in spiritual cultivation, an initial effect of the practice. This is precisely the result sought through observing mental formations in meditative concentration. More new discoveries will follow. As this quantitative accumulation reaches a certain degree, it will lead to a qualitative transformation. This transformation will gradually reveal that the five aggregates are all like an automated mechanism—illusory, unreal, beyond one's control, universally impermanent, and devoid of self. Ultimately, this leads to severing the view of self. Therefore, observation should be simply observation—direct, present-moment observation—without imposing the assertions or thoughts of the conscious mind. Gradually, you will discover facts and truths that have remained unseen since beginningless kalpas. To discover truth, you need only pay close attention and focus solely on the observed Dharma. With sustained, deepening effort, realization will be naturally achieved, and the truths embedded within the Dharma will reveal themselves.
