What Happens When One Attains Anatman

Question: If everyone were to cultivate and attain the treasury of bodhi, becoming without self, without form, without consciousness, without mouth, nose, tongue, body, or mind—like a stone, like natural law—it is truly no longer me. What kind of state is that? Is it great liberation? Sometimes, I find the idea of having no consciousness quite terrifying! I hope the master can resolve my confusion!

Answer: Eliminating the view of self and realizing selflessness does not mean that the functions of form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness cease to exist. Their functions remain, but the mind's behavior changes, and wisdom increases. It is not like becoming a stone, devoid of awareness and incapable of action. After realizing selflessness, one understands the illusory nature of these functions. Body, speech, and mind become purified, gradually ceasing to commit unwholesome deeds and meaningless actions. The person remains the same as before, but the mind has transformed.
